They say you shouldn’t feed those birds. They’re pesky and noisy, and have invaded this unlikely place. It is reported that are pushing away the other, more native hollow-nesters such as the green woodpecker, driving ecologists and serious birdwatchers to despair.

But I can’t help it. Because I know how they think, gathering in their dortoirs at the end of the day, in their flocks of brilliant grasshopper green. I know what they like - fruits and peanuts that they grasp with their big, handy feet, and how they need to work at their food, reducing an entire apple to a core in a single morning. Their cry is shrill and startling, but they also talk to each other in that sly, bending way that only hook bills do.

Before I lived in Northern France, I was a Brooklynite, and I had a ring-necked parakeet named Macadamia. I had to give her up when we moved, and it broke my heart. I can honestly say she was one of the great loves of my life.

The pandemic has been lonely in my little studio apartment. Thank goodness for the terrace. Every morning I fill the bird feeders. The life outside my door have been a real respite from that loneliness: the nocturnal hedge hogs, and the tits, doves, wood pigeons, Eurasian jays, European robins, magpies, thrush, blackbirds, crows and yes, Macadamia clones flying free! I hear woodpeckers still whooping it up, by the way. I am happy.
