Dawn chorus abstraction. When large numbers of birds are singing together, it can be difficult to differentiate individual songs or calls. To simplify the sound of a dawn chorus, the recording made on Dawn Chorus Day was processed using a digital filter. This randomly samples just a small proportion of the frequencies in the recording, and also cleans the signal, to reduce it to its component partials. The result is a kind of digital trace of the recording, which highlights just a tiny fraction of the sonic information communicated by the birds.
